A brand new invention of the Tiandi-based Xingyun Engineering Corps. The Pulsar Engine, as the name suggests, uses the raw power of a neutron star to generate electricity. NanoTrasen is excited to announce the installation of a prototype generator, the first of its kind to be installed upon a moving vessel, aboard the NEV Northern Light as part of a coalition between NT and their new partners at Xingyun. This document has been provided to the Command and Engineering staff of the Northern Light to provide guidance on the setup and maintenance of this revolutionary piece of technology.

Setup

How to operate the Pulsar Engine and not annihilate the crew 101:

  • Enter the Harvester satellite through the portal located on the main floor of Engineering.
  • Using the operating console, steer the Harvester satellite to a desired location near the Pulsar. Steering the satellite expends fuel, stored in an onboard fuel tank.
  • The fuel tank can be refilled via the use of portable plasma tanks.
  • The set orbit will naturally decay over time, and therefore needs periodic supervision from an engineer. Orbital decay happens quicker, the closer the Harvester is to the star.

WARNING: Overfilling the fuel tank will result in tank rupture.

Energy Production

  • The closer the Harvester is to the Pulsar or its radiation beams, the more energy will be produced.
  • The energy is routed to the connected vessel or facility by the Power Bridge.

WARNING: Should the Harvester be positioned too close to the Pulsar or the radiation beams it emits, the overwhelming radiation will begin leaking through the portal, back to any vessel or facility powered by the Harvester, bathing it in high doses of ionizing radiation, until the engine’s orbit is corrected.

Shields

  • To withstand the tremendous barrage of energy expelled by the Pulsar, the Harvester is equipped with a shielding array, which must remain powered at all times. Luckily, a portion of the power generated by the Harvester is directly rerouted to the shields.
  • Shields will be put under more stress, and therefore require more power input, the closer to the star (or its radiation beams) the Harvester is positioned.

WARNING: Should the shielding fail, any vessel or facility powered by the Harvester will be a subject to anomalous, localised discharges of energy, capable of melting through plasteel walls. The anomalies will persist until sufficient shielding is brought back up.

Emergency

In the event of catastrophic system failure due to sabotage or gross incompetence, the Power Bridge can be used to sever the connection between the Harvester and any linked vessel or facility. Any Exultant taking this radical step, however, is encouraged to throw themselves out of the nearest airlock, sans voidsuit and air supply.
